LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION AT USC PACIFIC ASIA MUSEUM

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION AT USC PACIFIC ASIA MUSEUM

The USC Pacific Asia Museum invites you to celebrate Lunar New Year on Saturday, February 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This wonderful cultural event welcomes the Year of the Dragon, a symbol of power and prosperity in many Asian cultures. Admission is free, so bring your family and friends to immerse yourself in a rich tapestry of Asian traditions and artistic expressions.
The museum has curated a diverse range of activities and performances that cater to all ages. You can start by engaging in creative dragon-themed crafts by Barnsdall Arts to honor the mythical creature central to this year’s festivities. Witness the art of calligraphy, an integral part of Asian heritage, and perhaps try your hand at this ancient art form.

The day’s events will begin with a dynamic lion dance and martial arts demonstration by the Northern Shaolin Kung Fu Association, a spectacle that traditionally wards off evil spirits and brings good luck. There will be performances by various groups throughout the day, including the USC Traditional Chinese Dance (USC TCD) group, the Korean Classical Music and Dance Company, the Lan Nartthasin Thai Dance Group LA, opera soprano Shirley Wang, and Vietnamese traditional dance from UCLA.

The Altadena Public Library will present a special storytime ideal for young attendees and families. Concluding the day’s performances, USC Kazan Taiko will take the stage, demonstrating the energy and spirit of taiko, a traditional Japanese form of percussion.

Along with the performances, you will also get to explore the food trucks that offer a variety of Asian cuisines. This will provide a glimpse of the diverse culinary traditions associated with the Lunar New Year.
